My Final Photography Assignment: The Mysterious Refinery

It took me a while to decide what I was going to do for my final project. I wanted something different from all of the photos that I have taken up until this point, but I also didn't want it to be too weird. I was finally able to make my decision based on a location. I knew that there was one place that I certainly had never gone to take pictures and that place was Genola. More specifically I had never visited the old refinery. As a kid I remember always driving past the old refinery on our way to and from Genola and the place always struck me as interesting. It appeared to me, as a small child that I was, to be a haunted castle that was placed eerily on the side of the mountain. I have always wanted to go up and explore the ruins of this haunted castle for myself, and so that was how I decided that I was going to take pictures of the old refinery.

The photos will consist primarily of architectural structures of the old refinery. I imagine that there will be plenty of interesting pillars and structures many of them covered with an assortment of graffiti. I will make the pictures black and white because I want the viewer to focus on the beauty and the mysteriousness of the building itself. I will also include photos from the surrounding landscape of the refinery. There are two hot springs at the base of the building that, as I understand it, people used to swim in. Recently however the city tested the water and found that the water contained potentially harmful leaves of arsenic, so the pools and the refinery have not been explored for many years. I look forward to this expedition and the great photos that will be developed as a result. Enjoy.
